Julia Lastinec
Julia Lastinec was born about 1871 in the Kingdom of Hungary, then part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. Her stone gives 1871. The census takers wrote her age differently: 42 in 1920, which would make her born about 1878, and a birth about 1875 in 1950. In 1950 her birthplace was written as Czechoslovakia. Her maiden name is not known.
She married Stephan Lastinec, born in 1877. Their son Stephen was born on 1 March 1903, and that same year Julia, Stephan and the baby came to America. Joseph followed about 1905 and Mary about 1907, both born in Pennsylvania. A daughter, Helen, was born in Austria-Hungary.
By 1918 the family had settled at 1613 Wayne Avenue in Camden, New Jersey. In 1920 they were still there with all four children at home. Julia was 42 and kept the house. She spoke Slovak and no English, though her husband and children all did.
The marriage later came apart. By 1930 Stephan was boarding in Philadelphia, and in 1950 he called himself divorced. On 13 April 1950 Julia was living at Moorestown, Burlington County, New Jersey, with her son Joseph.
Julia died in 1956, four years after Stephan. She was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery at Moorestown. Her children chose a stone with a carved cross wound with ivy, and across the top the words OUR MOTHER.
