Karen Jensdatter
Widow at Klevjer in Sande when the census was taken in February 1801, aged sixty, entered as Madmoder, the mistress of the house, and against the occupation column Bruger jord, she works land. That is not nothing. The Klevjer entry holds four separate households and the other three are headed by men; hers is the second, and it is hers, with her son's family living in it rather than the other way about.
Three of her children are in the house with her. John Tollevssen, twenty-seven, a snedker or joiner, with his wife Maren Andersdatter and their four-year-old Tollev; Anders Tollevssen, twenty-six, a skoemager or shoemaker, entered in the plainest possible terms as Son til 1te madmoder, son of the first mistress of the house; and Anne Tollevsdatter, twenty-five. Their patronymics give her husband's name, Tollev, and the marital status column reads 1te gang enke, widow of a first marriage, so she had married once and he was dead before 1801.
Her son Anders married Chatrine Jensdatter of Biorge in July 1806, was living at Gryte by 1810, and fathered there in 1818 the Mathis Andersen who took the family to Grant County, Wisconsin and then to Chippewa County, Minnesota.
