Kate Estelle Revels
Kate Estelle Revels was born in Chester County, South Carolina, on 7 October 1891, a daughter of Jeff Revels and Ida Brooks. Her family called her Katie.
She grew up in the country around Armenia, in Chester County. In late February 1900, when she was eight, a storm of wind, rain and hail tore across the county, and her father's house and nearly all his outbuildings were demolished or badly damaged.
She married George Washington Ferrell of Chester County, nine years her senior. Their eldest daughter, Virgie, was born about 1907, when Kate was about sixteen. George Roland followed on Christmas Day 1910, then Sammie about 1911 and Margaret about 1915.
In January 1920 Katie was living in the town of Chester with Virgie, Roland, Sammie and Margaret, and George was not listed with them. Three young men named Revels shared the house: Ernest, 21, Irvine, 16, and Heber, 12. Irvine at least was her brother: his death certificate names his father as Jeff D. Revels. He died at the Baldwin Mills village in Chester in September 1924, aged twenty, and was buried at Armenia. Ernest and Heber were very likely her brothers too, though the census does not say so.
More children came in the 1920s: Luther Leroy, Elizabeth, Carl and Robert Lee. In April 1940 Kate, 48, was keeping house for George and five of the children in Chester Township, just outside the city, with Luther's young wife Mary Elizabeth. Her son Roland and his wife Eva Mae lived in the next house.
She had worked most of her life as a domestic. She died at the Chester County Hospital on 24 March 1955, aged 63, and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Chester two days later. Her son Roland gave the details for her death certificate, including her parents' names. George lived five more years and was buried beside her.
