Knud Poulsen

A landless man at Røed near Drammen, thirty-three when the census of February 1801 counted him there, and the father of the schoolmaster who married into the Aas farm in Sande.

The census puts three households on Røed and his is the middle one. In the first sits his own father, Poul Ellingsen, sixty-eight and a widower, living off half an odegaard, with two grown children still at home. In the third is Niels Rejersen, who works the other half. Between them Knud Poulsen is entered with the two plainest words in the whole column, INGEN JORD, no land. His father had a holding and he did not, and that is the ordinary arithmetic of a farm too small to divide.

He and Ingeborg Helgesdatter had Elling in 1795, HELGE in April 1797 and Berthe in 1799, and the two eldest carry the names that place this family: Elling for the grandfather Poul's own father, and Helge for Ingeborg's father. The middle boy left. He turns up in Sande twenty miles down the fjord in March 1819, twenty-two years old and entered Ungkarl Skolelærer, bachelor schoolmaster, marrying a farmer's daughter from Ostre Aas, and he ended his life owning land at Klevjer. What his father never had, his son got.
