Lawrence Payne
Lawrence James Payne was born on 1 February 1937 in Saginaw County, Michigan. Everyone called him Jim. His parents were Gordon Day Payne and Mabel Schultz. He had an older sister, Nellie, and older brothers Gerald and John. Another brother, Dale, died that July at the age of two.
He grew up in Frost Township, Clare County, in the middle of Michigan's lower peninsula, cutover pine country of small farms and second growth timber. In 1940 he was three. His father worked as a laborer on road construction under the Depression relief programs, and his mother kept house. A younger brother, Leon, had just been born.
By 1950 his parents had separated. In April 1950 Jim was thirteen and living with his father and his brothers John and Leon in Frost Township. His father cut logs for the lumber trade. His mother later married Luther Albrecht, called Bill, of Saginaw. His father married Helen Budd, and Jim gained two much younger half brothers, Francis and Randy, both of whom died as children.
On 27 August 1958 he married Helena Moncada, the eldest daughter of a Texas family that had come north to Saginaw after the war. They were married for fifty-four years. They had seven children: Larry, Mark, Victor, Gerald, Dean, Lee and Julie. Victor was born at Saginaw in 1961 and Julie in 1962.
Jim worked for many years at El Gallito, a Mexican restaurant in Bridgeport, just south of Saginaw. He loved the outdoors. He fished, went smelt dipping in the spring, and shot pool for years. By the end of his life he had more than thirty-two grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.
Lawrence James Payne Sr. died on 30 October 2012, aged 75, while living at Bridgeport. He was cremated, and the family held a luncheon in his memory at Faith Lutheran Church in Bridgeport.
