Lieut. Eleazar Snow
Eleazar Snow was born at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, on 30 October 1734, a son of Eleazar Snow and Mercy King. The town clerk entered him as "Eleazer, ch. Eleazer and Mercy." He married Mary, a daughter of John Wood, in 1757, and lived in the North Parish of Bridgewater, which became the town of North Bridgewater and later Brockton.
Mitchell's History of the Early Settlement of Bridgewater lists ten children: Mary in 1757, Eleazar in 1759, Priscilla in 1761, then Jonathan, Silas, Betsy, Sarah, Zevina, Mercy and Phebe. The town clerk entered Priscilla as "ch. Eleazer Jr. and Mary, Apr. 12, 1761." Mercy married Nathaniel Wilmouth in 1795. The son Eleazar married Hannah, a daughter of Jacob Dunbar, in 1780 "and settled in the State of New York."
He held the rank of lieutenant, and both his stone and his wife's give it to him. He died on 1 February 1797. He is buried in Melrose Cemetery at Brockton under a slate stone carved with a winged face, which says he died "in the 64 year of his age". By the birth record he was sixty two. His wife Mary outlived him by twenty seven years and lies near him.
