Lillian Fay
Lillian Fay was born in Pennsylvania about 1861 or 1863. Her husband's death notice in October 1922 named her "Lillian Fay Dalrymple"; two records of her marriage give the surname as Fhey and as They.
On 7 September 1891, at Pittsburgh, she married Fitzwilliam Dalrymple, an Irish-born physician who had trained at Trinity College, Dublin, and Bellevue Hospital in New York. She gave her age as thirty and he gave his as thirty-three. That same year the doctor moved his practice from New York City to New Rochelle, in Westchester County, and they lived there the rest of their lives. Their son, Fitzwilliam Jr., was born in New Rochelle on 4 January 1893. The 1905 state census found the three of them in the city's second ward.
Her husband served the New Rochelle Hospital and was at one time the city's health officer and police surgeon. In August 1899 he nearly drowned in Echo Bay chasing their boy's toy sailboat. He died after a long illness at their home, 14 Beauchamp Place, in October 1922, and was buried privately after a funeral mass at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament. His obituary said he was survived by his wife and his son, then a lieutenant in the Naval Reserve's aviation corps.
Her son died on 2 January 1940, aged forty-six. That April the census found Lillian Dalrymple, a widow of seventy-seven born in Pennsylvania, at the head of a household in New Rochelle's second ward, in a house she had lived in since at least 1935. Her son's widow, Beatrice, was there with all four of his daughters, Beatrice, Joan, Patricia and Joy. The census does not state the tie, but the name, the birthplace and the household make her almost certainly the doctor's widow.
A Lillian Dalrymple who died on 26 January 1946 is buried at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, where the doctor and their son lie. No birth date or family is recorded with her burial, so whether she is the doctor's widow is not proved, though the cemetery makes it likely.
