Louis Bruner
Louis Bruner was born in Pennsylvania about 1889, to parents who were both born in Pennsylvania. He first married at nineteen, about 1908. His first wife was born in West Virginia, and two daughters of that marriage, Geraldine and Evelyne, were born in Oklahoma about 1913 and 1915.
In April 1930 he lived at Watchorn, an unincorporated oil-field village in Otoe Township of Pawnee County, Oklahoma. Most of the men around him pumped oil wells or worked in the fields as laborers. He was 41 and worked as a laborer in the oil fields. He owned his house and valued it at $150. His household was his wife Minnie, 20, born in Arkansas, his daughters Geraldine, 17, and Evelyne, 15, and Marie, three years and five months old. The enumerator, Ray L. Hedges, listed Marie as his daughter and gave her father's birthplace as Pennsylvania, the same as his own.
Minnie was Minnie Lee Teague. She had turned seventeen six days before Marie was born at Watchorn on 22 November 1926, and she told the enumerator she had first married at sixteen. By December 1930 she was using her maiden name again, and on 20 December she married Frank Sappington at Perry. Marie grew up under the Sappington name.
When Marie applied for Social Security she gave her father's name as Lois Bruner. The family remembers that she was adopted. By their account she was born Clara Marie Foster, her natural father was a W. M. Foster, and her name was changed to Marie Clara Bruner. If that is right, Louis Bruner was the man who gave her his name rather than her father by birth. No record that names a Foster for her has come to light, and what became of Louis after 1930 is not known.
