Louise K. Maslyk
Louise K. Maslyk was born in Poland on 15 August 1887. Her given name was Ludwika Kathryn. Ludwika is the Polish form of Louise, and in America she was known as Louise K. Slanczka. Her son John wrote her name as Ludwika Kathryn Slanczka when he registered for the draft in 1940, naming her as the person who would always know where he was.
She married Frank Slanczka, also from Poland. Their first child, Rose, was born in Ohio about 1913, at Cleveland by Rose's own account. By 1915 they were living at Clymer in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, a coal town, and there she raised eight children: Rose, Telford, Lewis, John, Frank, Walter, Anthony and Helen. In 1930 the family was in Green Township, Indiana County.
Frank died in 1936, when Helen was about six. Louise was a widow for the rest of her life. Several of her sons settled in Lorain County, Ohio, and she ended her life there too. She died at Amherst, Ohio, on 16 March 1973, aged 85.
She was buried in Saint Mary Cemetery at Elyria, Section 9, Lot 1041. Her flat red granite marker reads MOTHER, LOUISE K. SLANCZKA, 1887, 1973, with a cross between the years and a line along the bottom: LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON HER. That line comes from the Catholic prayer for the dead.
