Lucy G. Chase
Lucy Chase was born at Harwich on 4 January 1825, the second child of Seth Chase Jr. and Catherine Ellis. The town book lists her among ten brothers and sisters, from Nathan in 1823 to Tryphena in 1847. Her gravestone gives the year of her birth as 1824.
On 10 November 1844, at nineteen, she married Stephen Smith of Harwich, a mariner. Her daughter Emily was born on 15 November 1853.
In January 1864 Stephen enlisted in the 58th Massachusetts Infantry. On 6 May he was wounded and missing at the Wilderness in Virginia, and he was never found. Lucy was a widow at thirty-nine. She lived another twenty-six years and died at South Yarmouth on 18 March 1890, near her daughter Emily Crowell. She was buried at North Harwich, under a stone that reads: "Lucy, widow of Stephen Smith. Born Jan. 4, 1824. Died Mar. 18, 1890."
Her husband's line and her own met again a generation later. Her father Seth Chase Jr. was a brother of Philip Chase of Harwich, so her granddaughter-in-law Anna Eliza Chase, who married Stephen Crowell in 1899, was Philip's granddaughter and her own kinswoman.
