Lula May Asbury was born on 1 July 1890 in Chelsea, Butler County, Kansas. She was the first child of Overly Barton Asbury and Sarah Ann "Sallie" (Barger) Asbury, and her one brother was John Ogden Asbury.

She first married Francis Barnhart, son of Henry Barnhart and Rachel Ellen Haworth. They had three sons: Arthur Ogden, John Willis and Leroy Francis "Pete" Barnhart. Her memorial says Francis left the family when Pete was less than a year old. The boys were raised mostly by their grandparents.

On 4 December 1917, aged 27, she married George Walter Askins. Only two of their children lived to adulthood: Cecil Nile Askins and Iona May Askins, later Stewart. Mary Ellen died on 14 March 1922 and was buried in South Prairie Cemetery. Several other children died in infancy and were buried at Highland Cemetery in Winfield. Her memorial says Iona married and left, and afterward had little or nothing to do with the family.

Lula May Askins died on 17 March 1957 in Winfield, Cowley County, Kansas, aged 66. Her memorial gives the cause as complications of a broken hip. She is buried in Highland Cemetery, Winfield.
