Father: Gov. William Bradford
Mother: Alice Carpenter

William Bradford was born at Plymouth in 1624, the first child of Governor William Bradford and his second wife Alice, the widow of Edward Southworth. His parents had married the summer before, a few days after his mother landed from the Anne. A sister Mercy followed in 1627 and a brother Joseph in 1630. He had an elder half-brother, John, his father's son by Dorothy May, who had come in the Mayflower. On his mother's side he had two older half-brothers, Constant and Thomas Southworth, who came over from England in 1628.

He married Alice Richards, a daughter of Thomas Richards of Weymouth and his wife Welthian. Her sister Mary was the wife of Thomas Hinckley, later governor of the colony. William and Alice had ten children: John in 1652, William in 1655, Thomas, Samuel in 1668, and the daughters Alice, Hannah, Mercy, Melatiah, Mary and Sarah. Alice died on 12 December 1671.

He married second a widow Wiswall, perhaps a daughter of Thomas Fitch of Norwalk, and had a son Joseph in 1674. He married third Mary, the widow of John Holmes and a daughter of John Atwood, and had Israel in 1679, Ephraim in 1690, David and Hezekiah.

His mother's will of December 1669 calls him "Captain William Bradford," and he was later Major. He rose to be deputy governor of Plymouth Colony, the officer who stood in for the governor and sat at the head of the magistrates in his absence. When his mother died in 1670 her will divided her sheep between Constant Southworth and Joseph Bradford on one side and Captain William Bradford on the other.

Two of his daughters married into the Steele family of Connecticut. Mercy married Samuel Steele of Hartford in 1680. Melatiah married Samuel's cousin, John Steele of Norwich. His daughter Alice married first William Adams of Dedham and then James Fitch of Norwich, and his son Thomas married Anna Fitch. He died in 1703/4.
