Malon Laurel Waldron
Malon Laurel Waldron was born on 21 January 1853 in Indiana; his family gives the county as Marion, the county of Indianapolis. His death certificate names his father as Isaac Waldron, born in Indiana, and does not know his mother. His family gives his father as James O. Waldron. His name was written many ways: Malon on his own stone and his death certificate, Mahlon and Mahlan in his children's records, Maylon and Mayland in others.
On 15 May 1872, at Anamosa in Jones County, Iowa, he married Anna S. Pierce, whose stone calls her Anncivilla. Iowa's rolls of men liable for militia duty list him at Massillon in Cedar County and at Hale in Jones County. The family later settled in Cass County, in southwest Iowa. Their eldest son, James Melvin, was born about 1872, and at least ten more children followed over the next twenty-five years: Clara, Anna, Frank, Maude, John, Jennie, George, Grace, Nellie and Floyd. George was born near Cumberland in September 1886.
Anncivilla died on 18 February 1901, when Floyd was still a small boy. Malon's daughter Jennie married William Christopher Lehman in Cass County in December 1902, and her marriage record names her father as Mahlan Waldron.
By 1910 Malon had gone west to Oelrichs, in Fall River County, South Dakota, with his youngest son Floyd. He farmed until 1914, fifty years in all. In 1930 he was living in Jackson Township, Adair County, and two years before his death he moved to Victoria Township in Cass County. He died there on 9 March 1934, aged 81, a widower. His daughter Mrs. Anson South gave the details for his death certificate. He was buried on 13 March in Greenwood Cemetery at Cumberland, beside Anncivilla, under a stone that reads MALON L. WALDRON, JAN. 21, 1853, MAR. 9, 1934.
