Margaret Bond was born in Indiana on 10 May 1825. On 25 May 1843, at eighteen, she married Wesley Elam in Scott County, in the southwest corner of Virginia.
In 1850 she was 24, living in Scott County with Wesley and their children Rebecca J., Sarah A., James M. and William M. A son named for his father, Wesley Elbert, came in the 1850s, and Walter, Victory and Lucy H. later. The census takers found the family in Scott County again in 1860 and 1870.
By 1880 they had moved north to Walker district of Wise County, the country that was becoming Dickenson County. That June the census taker wrote her as Margreatte Elam, living with Wesley, 55, and Walter, Victory and Lucy. Her daughter Sarah Ann had married Amos Reed in 1866 and lived nearby at Freeling. Lucy married a McFall. Elbert Wesley went north to Lawrence County, Ohio, and died there in 1909.
Margaret died at Clintwood on 20 March 1900, aged 74, and was buried in the Short Cemetery there. Her worn stone spells the name Elem.
Her maiden name survives on the records of her children. The death certificates of Sarah Ann Reed in Virginia in 1925, of Lucy McFall, of Walter Elam in Kentucky and of Elbert Wesley Elam in Ohio in 1909 all name their mother Margaret Bond.
