Margaret Cox

Margaret Cox was born on 20 January 1847 in Dallas County, Texas, and was raised a daughter of Cornelius and Catharine Cox, a pioneer family that had worked its way through Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa and Missouri before reaching Dallas in the town's first years. Her descendants still tell the story that she was not born to them at all, that she was an infant left on their porch and taken in. The 1850 census cannot tell the difference. It lists Margaret, three, born in Texas, among the children of the house.

Then the household that raised her came apart. Cornelius died about 1850 and Katy in 1853, and she had lost both of them before she was seven.

She married William Murphy Kemp on 11 November 1865, when she was eighteen, and raised her family in Dallas and Hamilton counties. Mary Elizabeth came in 1866, Henry Fester in 1868, Cara Eveline in 1873, and William Jackson at McGirk in 1885, nineteen years after the first.

She outlived her husband and died a widow on 22 January 1931 in Mills County, two days after her eighty fourth birthday, of pneumonia. She was buried at Pecan Wells on the twenty fourth.
