Margaret Ellen Roberts
Margaret Ellen Roberts, called Maggie, was born about 1870 into a Roberts family of the western part of Chester County, South Carolina. She married Moses McKeown, and they lived a short way outside the town of Chester. Their daughter Mary Cornelia was born on 28 December 1887.
Moses died on 29 July 1899, aged thirty-five, and left Maggie a widow of about twenty-nine with four children.
She moved into the town's mill villages. In September 1914 she was living on Saluda Street when her brother John Roberts, fifty-eight, was struck by paralysis at her house on a Saturday evening. He never regained consciousness and died there the following Tuesday night.
Maggie died four months later, on Friday 29 January 1915, at her home at the Springstein cotton mill in Chester, about forty-five years old. She was buried the next morning at Armenia beside Moses, after a service by the Revs. T. H. Roach and J. H. Yarborough. Her notice named her daughters as "Mesdames Wylie Bigham, Arthur Bigham and Chalmers Gaston", her son George H. McKeown, her brothers Obadiah and Robert Roberts, and four sisters, Mrs. W. M. Quinton, Mrs. J. J. Dodds, Mrs. W. O. Roberts and Mrs. Jane Clark.
