She was born in Ohio about 1898, a daughter of Jack Scarberry and Ada Fillinger, and her given name is written differently in almost every record. The 1910 census indexes her as Margaret Myrtie Marie Scarberry. The 1920 census calls her Mistie. The 1940 calls her Myrtie. The 1950 calls her Murtta. Her daughter's obituary index entry in 2010 calls her Marie.
In 1910, aged ten, she is not living with her parents. She is in the Union District of Cabell County, West Virginia in the household of her grandfather Andrew J. Scarberry, aged sixty four and born at Gallipolis, with her grandmother Alley. Why is not recorded. Both her parents are named on her marriage return seven years later.
On 21 April 1917 she married James Curtis Dailey in Lawrence County, Ohio. The Daileys were living in the same Union District in the same 1910 census as her grandfather, so she almost certainly married a boy she had grown up beside.
She raised at least five children in Cabell County. Her fourth, Elva Jean, married a Golden.
