Maria Barbara Engelhardt
Maria Barbara Engelhardt was born on 24 September 1831 at Dinkelsbühl, a town in Middle Franconia in northern Bavaria, by her gravestone. She came to America in 1852. Her husband's obituary says that "in 1855 he was married to the girl who had been his sweetheart in Germany, who came to America in 1852". He was John Diedrich Dettmer, eight years older, from Braunschweig.
Their first child, Anna Sophia, was born at Blooming Grove in Orange County, New York, on 12 January 1856, and John E. on 4 August 1859. The boy's middle name, Engelhardt, was hers. In 1867 the family moved to Wells County, Indiana, into the German Lutheran settlement near Ossian. The 1880 census has her as Mary B., 48, born in Germany.
The doctor began attending her in January 1904. She died at Ossian at six in the evening on 30 August 1904, of carcinoma of the pylorus, a cancer at the outlet of the stomach. She was seventy-two. Her death certificate names her "Mary B. Debtmer", wife of John Debtmer, and gives her father's name only as "Englehert", born in Germany. For her mother's maiden name and birthplace her husband answered "Don't Know". The certificate gives her age as 73 years, 11 months and 6 days. From the birth date on the same page the true figure is 72 years, 11 months and 6 days, which is what her stone says.
She is buried at St. Mark's Lutheran under a tall granite monument lettered in German: "HIER RUHET IN GOTT / MARIA BARBARA / GEBORNE ENGELHARDT / EHEFRAU VON / JOH. D. DETTMER / GEB. 24 SEPT. 1831 / IN DINKELSBUHL BAIERN / GEST. 30 AUG. 1904 / ALTER 72 JAH. 11 MO. 6 TA. / LEICHEN TEXT JESAIA 61.10". Here rests in God Maria Barbara, born Engelhardt, wife of Joh. D. Dettmer, born 24 September 1831 in Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria, died 30 August 1904. The funeral text, Isaiah 61:10, begins "I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God".
