Marie A. Barcal was born on 2 February 1850 at Vodňany, a market town in southern Bohemia, and spent her girlhood there. She married Vaclav J. Smrz. Their sons were Frank James Smrz, born in November 1875, and James F. Smrz.

In 1879, by her obituary, she came to America with her husband and made a home in Chicago. They lived there until 1897, when they moved to Eastman, in Crawford County, Wisconsin. In the spring of 1910 they left Wisconsin for Montana. There she took an active part with her husband and son in the pioneering life of the Hingham country.

Vaclav died on their farm on 5 March 1922, and she found his body. Her sons begged her to leave the homestead. She stayed, and lived out her last eight years there. She died at Hingham on 24 February 1930, aged 80. Her funeral was held at St. Mary's Church and she was buried in the Union Cemetery at Hingham, beside Vaclav. She left two sons, Frank of Seattle and James of Chicago, and fourteen grandchildren. Her stone reads MARIE SMRZ 1850 1930.
