Marie Chadrayne

Hiers, Saintonge, France
Mother: Jean Chadeayne
Children include Marie

Marie Chadrayne was the daughter of Jean Chadeayne, a Huguenot shipmaster of Hiers, near Brouage in Saintonge, on the Atlantic coast of France. Her marriage entry calls her "Marie Chadaine de yers en St onge," of Hiers in Saintonge. Her name is also written Chadaine, Chadeyne and Chadraigne.

In 1682 her father fled France with his wife, his mother-in-law, four children and a niece. The French list of fugitives gives their refuge as Cork, in Ireland. She was very probably one of the four children. After some years in Cork the family crossed to America. By 1686 her father was one of the French planters at Frenchtown, in the Narragansett country of Rhode Island. When that settlement broke up, the family moved on to New York.

On 16 July 1693, before evening prayer, the minister Peyret blessed her marriage to Josué Mercereau at the French Church of New York. Josué, called Joshua in English, was a Huguenot refugee from Moeze, on the same Saintonge marshes as Hiers. His sister Marie married Jean La Tourette the same day. Marie signed her own entry as "Marie Chadeyne." Her father and Henri Chadeayne signed as witnesses. So did Marie Bouchris, Jean La Tourette, Elie Boudinot, J. Barberie, Elie Vanbert and Pierre Masse.

Marie and Joshua settled on Staten Island. Their daughter Marie was baptized on 16 May 1695, and Marie's father presented the child for baptism as godfather. Their son Joshua was born in New York City on 18 May 1696 and baptized on 5 July, with Daniel Mersereau and Marie Boucherie as his godparents. Paul and David followed.

Her father made his will on Staten Island in 1708. He left "my daughter Mary, wife of Joshua Mesereau, £20." His other children were John, Henry, Martha and Elizabeth. A Henry Chadrayne witnessed her son Joshua's will in 1756. He was her brother or her brother's son.
