Marijke Kasemier
Marijke Kasemier was born on 19 August 1824 at Nieuwe Compagnie, a canal settlement in the municipality of Hoogezand in the Groningen peat colonies, and registered two days later. Her father, Hinderikus Hindriks Kasemier, was a landbouwer, a farmer, of thirty-eight, born at Annerveen across the Drenthe border; her mother, Leentje Jurriens Gruber, was thirty-five. She had an elder sister Hilligje, baptised at Sappemeer in 1811, and other brothers and sisters born between 1815 and 1834. Her father died at Nieuwe Compagnie in January 1850, a labourer by then, aged sixty-two.
She went into service. On 20 May 1854 at Sappemeer, a dienstmeid of twenty-nine, she married Pieter Tiemeijer, a day labourer of her own age from Hoogezand who had buried his first wife. He became a barge skipper on the colony canals. Their children were born at Sappemeer in 1855, 1861 and 1864 and at Wildervank in 1868; the son of 1861 was Jan, who went to Michigan. In old age she and Pieter lived at Oosterdiep on the Veendam canal.
Marijke died at Oosterdiep on 9 August 1901, aged seventy-six, the same summer her son's family sailed for Grand Rapids. Pieter followed her in December.
