Martha Cook Fletcher
The first wife of Harrison Benson Nash, and the woman the family's own account of its migration is told around. In about 1858 the household joined some thirteen other families and went west by oxen wagon, thirteen weeks on the road from Bowdon in Carroll County, Georgia, to Jackson Parish in Louisiana. They stopped there a year near old Georgia friends, and among the people they found waiting was an uncle of hers, the physician and writer Robert Malone Stell.
The next year her husband's brother came out from Georgia, and the two Nash brothers and a cousin settled along Spring Creek in Rapides Parish, on ground that became the town of Glenmora. She lived barely a year there. She died on 7 April 1860. Shortly before her death she asked to be buried near the church that was then, and still is, called Amiable. Hers was the first grave of what became Amiable cemetery. She left three children, Mary, Sarah A. and Amna.
