Martha How
Martha How, called Patty, lived at Wardsboro, Vermont, when she married Asa White at Dummerston on 27 November 1791. Jason Duncan, a justice of the peace, married them. The Dummerston town book lists their family under "Asa White and Martha his Wifes Children". Six are recorded there, born between 1792 and 1802, beginning with Annice on 26 May 1792. Joanna was born on 26 March 1794. A county history of 1884 says there were ten children in all.
The Dummerston chapter of the Vermont Historical Gazetteer names her parents as Benjamin and Zerviah How. Benjamin How was the only head of a How household in Wardsboro at the census of 1790, so she was probably of his family. But the same town book records Benjamin and Zeruiah's daughter "Patty, Born, March 31st 1782". That Patty was nine at the wedding and ten when Annice was born, so she was not the bride. Martha's own age at death puts her birth about 1770. Her parents are therefore not known.
In February 1823 she left Vermont with her husband and family for Erie County, Pennsylvania, brought by her son Isaac, who had settled at Waterford. She and Asa lived with Isaac for the last fifteen years of their lives. Asa died in 1855. Patty died on 11 April 1857, aged eighty-seven, and was buried with him in Waterford Community Cemetery East under a monument that reads "PATTY WHITE died April 11, 1857 Aged 87 years".
