Born 1842, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Died 1928

Martin Hayes Himes was born in Philadelphia on 23 October 1842. He married Amanda M. Semlear, a girl from Williamsburg in Brooklyn who was a month younger than he was. Their first sons were born in Pennsylvania: Casper about 1865 and Robert about 1868. By 1870 the family had moved to Brooklyn, where George was born.

In June 1880 Martin was 37 and living in Brooklyn with Amanda, 38, and six children: Casper, 15, who worked in a glue factory, Robert, 12, George, 10, Carry, 7, Martie, 4, and Ida, 1. A 21-year-old Ida Himes, born in Pennsylvania, lived with them as well. Their daughter Carrie died young, in 1888.

Martin and Amanda were back in Pennsylvania in 1900, at Folsom in Ridley Township, Delaware County, just outside Philadelphia. The census that year said they had been married since about 1865, and their youngest daughter Ida was still with them. By 1905 they were in Brooklyn again.

By 1910 Martin and Amanda had moved out to Rockville Centre, on Long Island, a few miles from their son Casper's hotels at Lynbrook. They lived on South Park Avenue. Amanda died there of pneumonia on 15 June 1910, and the Baptist pastor, the Rev. Edwin B. Richmond, held her funeral in the house.

Martin lived on for eighteen more years. In 1920 the census found him in Rockville Centre with his granddaughter Lola B. Kinscherf, a daughter of his daughter Ida. He had retired by the late 1920s and lived on Lincoln Court, near Ida and her husband William G. Kinscherf. In March 1927 he lost his son Casper.

In November 1928 Martin had an operation and did not recover. He died at 34 Lincoln Court, his daughter's home, on 13 November 1928, aged 86. The Rev. Frederick F. Foshay of the Rockville Centre Baptist Church took the funeral there, and he was buried beside Amanda in the family lot at Cypress Hills Cemetery, Section 6, Lot 761, where Casper had been laid the year before. He left two sons, Robert and Martin H., and his daughter Ida. His will left Ida a lot on Lincoln Court next to her own and everything in his house. The estate came to over $2,500 in real estate and over $2,500 in personal property.
