Martina Betscher signed the Colerain deed of November 1856 as the wife of Joseph Betscher, and that is the only known document that carries her Christian name in her lifetime.

Her daughter Rosa's death certificate of 1943 answers the mother's column with UNKNOWN. Three other facts point to her. Rosa was born at White Oak on 28 July 1861, on the Dry Ridge farm Joseph had bought from his own father twenty months earlier. An elder daughter, Martina B. Betscher, was born on 28 January 1860, and was buried at Saint Bernard in 1937 as Martinia B. Stoeckel. Joseph was buried at Saint Bernard in 1912 and Rosa in 1943. Three of them in one small German Catholic burying ground, and the eldest girl carrying her mother's name.

So the wife who signed in 1856 is the mother of the girls born in 1860 and 1861, and Rosa's certificate is blank for the ordinary reason: it was answered in 1943 by somebody born long after this woman died.

She was born in Germany. That much the certificate did give, in the column beside the missing name.
