Mary A. Steepleton
Mary A. Steepleton was the daughter of William Steepleton. She married Samuel Myers, a blacksmith of Washington County, Pennsylvania, who followed his trade all his life. They had two children, Rebecca and David Rittenhouse, who was born in Washington County on 24 April 1839. Samuel died in 1841, leaving her a widow with two small children.
Her son described the family in a sketch printed in Texas in 1892: "He was married to Miss Mary A., a daughter of William Steepleton, and they had two children: Rebecca, of Virginia; and David R., the subject of this sketch. The father died in 1841, in Washington county, Pennsylvania, and the mother in 1879. The latter was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church." His 1920 Texas death certificate also names her, as Mary Steepleton.
Where she lived after 1841 and where she died are not recorded. She may have married again, which would explain why no 1850 household of a widow Mary Myers with a boy named David has been found. Her daughter Rebecca was living in Virginia in 1892, probably the part that had become West Virginia. The Steepleton name was thickest just across the state line from Washington County, in Wetzel, Tyler and Ohio counties.
Her mother may have been Abigail Cummins. James Steepleton, born in Pennsylvania in 1821, married in Washington County and later farmed in the Magnolia district of Wetzel County, West Virginia, where he died on 13 September 1894. A county biography names his parents as "William and Abigail (Cummins) Steepleton," and his death record agrees. He is the only Steepleton of about the right age tied to Washington County. If his father was Mary's father, James was her brother. No record joins the two.
