Mary Ann Brinson

Mary Ann Brinson, called Polly, was born on 30 October 1785 in North Carolina. Her parents were Rev. James Brinson, a Baptist preacher, and Patience Purser. A biography of her father names her first among his children, and when the family went to Louisiana she and her husband came in his company. Her brothers and sisters included Enoch, Elizabeth, Josiah, Hollen, Phillip Purser, Sarah Ann and James Brinson.

On 27 January 1806 she married Christopher Columbus Koonce in Wilson County, Tennessee. They had eight children: Lenora, Amander, Hellen Lois, Courtney Alison, James Carroll, George Brinson, Elizabeth Berlinda and Philip, the last born in 1822.

The Koonces went to Louisiana with her parents, in 1820 by the Baptist historian William E. Paxton (about 1816 or 1817 by family accounts), and settled first at Upper Pine Hills near Vienna, where her father gathered the Pine Hills Church in 1821 from his own family. They moved on into the northwest hill country of Claiborne Parish. On 11 June 1825 Polly and Christopher were charter members of Providence Church near Athens. She died five months later, on 12 November 1825, aged 40, leaving her youngest child three years old. She is buried in the Old Saline Baptist Church Cemetery, where her husband was laid twenty years later.
