Mary Ann Hall was born in Tennessee on 14 November 1831. She married Milton Jackson Keele, and in 1850 the two were living in Coffee County, Tennessee, he 21 and she 19. Her maiden name is Hall on the death certificates of two of her sons: Annie Hall for Finis in 1937 and Mary Jane Hall for Jefferson in 1964. Her daughter Mary Ann Keeney's certificate of 1952 gives it instead as Mary Ann Baccus.
In June 1860 the family was farming in Warren County, Tennessee, near McMinnville. Mary A. was 28, with five children: John G., 10, Margaret, 6, Melinda, 4, Francis, 3, and William, 1. The boy of 3 is Finis, born in March 1857. Her mother-in-law, Margaret Keel, a widow of 61 born in South Carolina, lived in the next house. Mary Ann, Milton and Joanna were born in the 1860s, Joanna in Texas, so the family had come west by about 1867.
Milton died in Bell County in March 1870, when Mary Ann was 38 and expecting another child. That August the census taker found her keeping house in Beat 5 of Bell County, near Belton, with land worth $200 and $100 in other property. With her were Lemon, 20, Margaret, 17, Malinda, 15, Finis, 12, William, 10, Mary, 9, Milton, 6, a child of 3 written James, and the baby Jefferson, born at Salado that month. Two doors away lived a P. E. Hall, 27, a farmer, with his wife Mary and a small daughter.
Ten years later, in June 1880, Mary A. Keele was 49, a widow, and was conducting the farm herself in Justice Precinct 5. Finis, 23, and William, 21, worked the farm, and Milton, 15, worked with them. Mary, 19, kept house at home, and Joanna, 12, and Jefferson, 9, were at school. Her married daughter Malinda Pickett, 24, was there with her own daughter Mattie, 2.
She lived thirty years in Bell County after Milton died and died there on 19 June 1900, aged 68. She was buried in the Little Flock Cemetery near Temple, apart from her husband, who lies at Salado. Her stone is a tall pointed marble tablet. It reads "Mary A. Keele, born Nov. 14, 1831, died June 19, 1900."
