Mary Bushnell
Mary Bushnell was born at Norwich, Connecticut, on 10 March 1675. She was the first child of Joseph Bushnell and Mary Leffingwell. The town clerk entered her birth straight after her parents' marriage: "The maryage of Joseph Bushnell with Mary Leffingwell was upon the 28th of November Anno Dom 1673. Mary Bushnell was borne the 10th of March Ano 1675."
Norwich was then about fifteen years old. Her mother's father, Thomas Leffingwell, was one of its founders. Her father's father, Richard Bushnell, had died at Norwalk in 1659 or 1660, and her father had grown up at Norwich in the house of his stepfather, Thomas Adgate. Her grandmother, Mary (Marvin) Adgate, lived until 1713.
Ten brothers and sisters followed her: Joseph in 1677, Jonathan in 1679, David in 1681, who died the same year, Deborah in 1682, Hariah in 1684, Nathan in 1686, Rebecka in 1688, Abigail in 1690, Rachell in 1692 and Jerusha in 1695.
On 26 September 1699 she married Elijah Brainerd, a son of Daniel Brainerd of Haddam, one of the first settlers of that town on the Connecticut River. Elijah had been baptised at Middletown in 1678. They lived at Haddam, and she bore nine children there. Mary was born on 20 June 1700 and married Moses Pond. Abigail was born on 20 June 1702 and married Gideon Arnold. Joseph was born on 21 June 1704 and married Mindwell Pond. Elijah followed on 22 September 1706, Thankful on 22 July 1709, Rachel on 13 May 1712, Jabez on 19 February 1714/5, Esther on 16 August 1717, and Phineas on 17 October 1720.
Her father-in-law died in 1715, and Elijah was one of the seven sons who settled his estate by agreement that May. Mary died at Haddam on 11 September 1735, aged sixty. Her youngest child, Phineas, was fourteen. Her husband died in 1740. Her parents outlived her. Her mother died at Norwich in 1745 in her ninety second year, and her father in 1746 in his ninety sixth.
