Mary Capehart
Mary Capehart was born on 27 June 1761 in Bertie County, North Carolina. Her memorial names her parents as Michael Capehart, who came from Germany, and Frances Nicholls.
On 17 March 1789 she married George Peter Zellner, a German who had come to America as a soldier during the Revolution and stayed. He was a widower with a small daughter, Barbara, by his first wife, Elizabeth Nicholls, said to have been Mary's cousin. Mary bore five children: Arnold in 1790, Sarah in 1792, John William in 1794, Andrew in 1798 and George Peter in 1800.
When Andrew was six months old the family moved to Lincoln County, Georgia. George made his will there in November 1821. He left "my beloved wife Mary Zellner" four hundred dollars, an enslaved girl named Milly, a horse and saddle, a cow and calf and her choice of the household furniture for life, with a feather bed of her own, and after her the property went to her five children. He died before January 1823, and their son George died the same year.
Her children then left Lincoln County for Monroe County, Georgia, and brought her with them. Her son Andrew settled near Forsyth in 1824. Mary lived another quarter century as a widow. She died on 1 November 1847 and was buried on her son Andrew's land, in what is now the Andrew Zellner Cemetery. Her stone reads: "Mary, wife of George P. Zellner, Died Nov. 1st, 1847, Aged 84 Years." Her son Arnold had moved to Tennessee long before, and he outlived her by five years.
