Mary Cowen
Mary Cowen was born at Scituate, Massachusetts, on 28 December 1691. The town clerk entered her as "Mary, d. Israell." She was the first child of Israel Cowen, the son of a Scot who had settled at Conihasset. Her name is also written Cowing.
She grew up on her grandfather John Cowen's land at Conihasset, east of the Pierce farm, with ten younger brothers and sisters born between 1693 and 1717. From 1708 the clerk names their mother as Hannah. Whether Hannah was also Mary's mother is not known.
On 5 February 1711/12 she married Benjamin Pierce Jr., entered as "Benjamin Jr. and Mary Cowing." She was twenty. Her husband was a grandson of Capt. Michael Pierce, who had been killed near Pawtucket in 1676 with nearly all his company. Her uncle Joseph Cowen had died in that same fight.
The Scituate births enter three of their children as children of "Benjamin Jr. and Mary": Benjamin; Martha, born 5 January 1712/13; and Mary, born 4 February 1717. Mary married Ebenezer Keith of Bridgewater in 1741.
Her father died in January 1718, when she was twenty six. Her husband married again, to Elizabeth Perry, so Mary died before him. The date of her death is not recorded.
