Mary Crossman married Bennet Taber at Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on 4 August 1782. The banns called her Polly. Both were "of D.", of Dartmouth. Her parents have not been found. Find a Grave gives her birth as 1760, at Dartmouth.

Her husband was a blacksmith at New Bedford. She witnessed his deed to Elkanah Hathaway in 1789. Their son Elisha was born about 1783. The family went west to Champaign County, Ohio, where Bennet was among the settlers before 1805.

At Urbana she signed deeds with her husband in 1836 and 1837, and was examined apart from him, as the law required, to show she consented. One of those deeds sold a lot to a school district to build a school house on.

Bennet died in 1837 and left his money to be invested for her keep for life. She outlived him by more than seven years. Her last illness was long. Her son-in-law Richard Baker kept and nursed her, and the estate owed him a hundred and fifty-seven dollars for it. Her son John told the court she had been "perfectly helpless, and a part of the time deranged". She died about 23 January 1845.

Find a Grave records her at Oakdale Cemetery, Urbana, and gives her death as June 1842. It notes that there are no cemetery records from that time and that she was presumed buried in the old town cemetery and moved to Oakdale.
