Mary (Dore or Dove) Sargent

1755-1858 · Virginia
Born 1755, Virginia
Died 1858
Children include John

Mary Sargent was born in Virginia on 8 April 1755, by the Sargent Record, a family genealogy printed in 1899. The book gives her maiden name as "Dore, or Dove". Its compiler could not tell which, and nothing found since settles it. The Daughters of the American Revolution later wrote her as Mary Dore Dove.

About 1783 she married Ephraim Sargent in Albemarle County, Virginia. The book says four of their children were born in Virginia and eight in South Carolina. The family settled at Six Mile, in the upcountry that later became Pickens District, and the book has her dying there.

Her children were Susan, Mary, Sarah, David, Nancy, John, Henry, Ephraim, James, Rachel, Elizabeth and Abraham Benson, though the compiler did not know their order. David, born about 1790, became a miner in Lumpkin County, Georgia. John, born in 1793, was a carpenter and a justice of the county court in Cherokee County, Georgia, and drowned in the Etowah at Canton in 1834. Henry was the blacksmith at Six Mile. Abraham, the youngest, was born on 23 December 1817.

That last date does not sit with the book's date for her. Born in 1755, she would have been sixty two when Abraham was born. Either her birth date is wrong or the youngest children had another mother.

On 24 July 1850 the census found an old woman in Abraham's house at Six Mile, next to Ephraim, who was ninety. The enumerator wrote her as Sarah, eighty five, born in Virginia. The state matches the book. The given name and the age do not. Sarah may be Mary under a name the informant or the enumerator got wrong. She may also be a second wife the compiler never heard of. The census of 1850 did not ask how anyone in a house was related to its head.

The book says she died at Six Mile in August 1858, five years after her husband, and was buried with him at Pleasant Hill church. With the book's own birth date that would make her a hundred and three, which is hard to believe as printed. With the census age it makes her about ninety three.
