Mary Evaline Stinecipher
Mary Evaline Stinecipher, called Evie, was born in Cherokee County, Texas, on 20 February 1877. A memorial to her names her parents as Francis Marion Stinecipher and Synthia Ann Bolton.
She was married three times. A first marriage to a Sanford gave her a son, Francis Lee Sanford, in 1893. A second, to a Hamby, gave her Fred C. Hamby in 1895 and Levi Columbus Hamby, called Lee, in 1897. Then she married James Jackson Dowdy, a farmer of the Troup country, and had five more children: George Dewey in 1902, Millie Ann in 1903, Claude Barron in 1907, Maudie Caroline in 1909 and Minnie Lou in 1916.
The census of 1920 called her Ava Dowdy, keeping house on the family farm in Justice Precinct 5 of Cherokee County. In 1930 she was Mary A. Dowdy, in the same precinct, with her youngest, Minnie, then 13.
Evie died at Troup on 5 January 1954, aged 76. She is buried at Union Grove Cemetery, Troup, under a stone she shares with James: "Mary E. 1877 - 1954".
