Mary Hall
Mary Hall, called Polly, was born in North Carolina about 1822. In 1880 she said both her parents had been born in South Carolina. Her age moved about in the censuses: 26 in 1850, 42 in 1860 and 58 in 1880. Her maiden name comes from her children. Four of them, John, Dice, Alice and Thornton, named their mother as Mary Hall or Polly Hall on their death certificates.
She married Adonijah Ball, known as Nige, a Tennessee farmer about six years older than she was. No record of the marriage survives. Cocke County's courthouse burned in 1876 and took the early marriage books with it. Their oldest children were born in the early 1840s, and the youngest, Thornton and Joseph, in the late 1860s. Over about twenty five years she bore at least fourteen children.
The family farmed in Cocke County, along Big Creek and the Grassy Fork country near Del Rio. In 1850 Mary had four children at home; in 1860 she had eight, with an older woman, Nancy Ball, 60, also born in North Carolina, living with them. In June 1880 she was keeping house in the thirteenth civil district for her husband, three daughters, two sons and three grandchildren. Next door lived Maranda, very probably her daughter, with her husband Bill Cagle and their children, and her son John lived in the house beyond.
In January 1893 Polly put her mark on a deed beside her husband's. She and Nige sold their son Thornton part of the old family land on Big Creek, about 25 acres, for $20. She died before the deed could be acknowledged. On 18 December 1894 the two witnesses swore at Newport "that they were acquainted with Polly Ball wife of Nige Ball during her life time that she is now dead", and that she had acknowledged the deed before them. She died, then, between January 1893 and December 1894. Her grave has not been identified.
Merinda Ball, who married Bill Cagle, was very probably her daughter. She was the Maranda in Mary's household in 1850 and 1860, and in 1880 she gave her mother's birthplace as North Carolina, Mary's own state.
