Born in Georgia about 1836. On 6 November 1855, aged about nineteen, Mary J. Baker was joined in matrimony to Ephraim B. Sargent by H. A. Williams, a Minister of the Gospel. The licence above the return was signed by the ordinary James Jordan, and the clerk did not get around to recording either of them until December 1857, two years late, which is ordinary for that book and that county. Her husband was thirty three and a widower with two small children.

She appears once in a census and only just. The enumerator who reached Bells District in 1860 wrote every Sargent household on his page in initials, and in the second line of the E. B. Sargent house is M. J., aged twenty four, born in Georgia. That is her whole census life: two letters, an age and a state. Under the same roof are her stepdaughter Mary L., aged twelve, and a one year old whose initials the index reads as B. A. and who ought by every other record to be Rebecca A.

She bore at least four children. Sarah came in 1858, Rebecca on 20 April 1859, Ephraim junior in 1862, and John R. between about 1864 and 1866. Rebecca married Thomas Melvin McCollum in 1879 and died in 1918.

She died on 16 April 1867, aged about thirty one, and lies at Woodstock in the same county under a stone that reads MARY J. BAKER SARGENT. Her husband took out a licence to marry again four months later. What she died of is not in any known record, and her youngest was two or three years old when it happened.
