Mary Jane Hagler
Mary Jane Hagler was born on 2 September 1845 in Barbour County, Alabama. Cemetery records name her parents as Thomas Jefferson Hagler (1811 to 1901) and Lydia A. Thomas (1818 to 1853). Her mother died when Mary Jane was seven, and her father married again and had a second family.
Early in 1866 she married Samuel Passmore, a Confederate veteran, in Barbour County. Their son James Marion was born that December. Soon after the war the couple moved to San Augustine County, Texas. In 1880 the census taker found Mary J., 32, at San Augustine with Sam and their children John M. (James Marion), William E., Thomas S., Walter, Francis and Emma.
By 1900 the family lived in Shelby County, and she told the census taker she had borne eight children, all of them living. They were James Marion, Willard A. "Eck," Stephen Thomas "Tom," Walter Jackson "Doss," Frances Eudora "Fannie," Emma Elizabeth, Lee Edward and Mary Ada.
Sam died on 30 August 1915. Mary Jane applied for a Texas Confederate widow's pension from Choice, in Shelby County, and the state approved application no. 31972 on 16 September 1915.
In January 1922 she went to visit her son J. M. Passmore at Center. She had been there a week when she died at his home on 17 January, aged 76. The Champion printed her obituary the next day. Her body was taken back to Antioch Cemetery in San Augustine County and buried beside Sam, under a stone carved "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord." S. P. Irvin was the undertaker. She was survived by her sons J. M., S. T., W. A., L. E. and W. J. Passmore and her daughters Mrs. M. K. Vail, Mrs. W. Page and Mrs. Frank Allen.
