Mary L. Smrz
Mary L. Smrz, also called Marie, was born on 25 March 1876. The 1940 census gives her birthplace as Bohemia and the 1950 census as Illinois. A family account says she was born at Ševětín, near České Budějovice in southern Bohemia, and came to America as a child. Her obituary says she was born and educated in Chicago.
She married Frank James Smrz, a Chicago bricklayer's son of Bohemian birth. They began their family at Eastman, in Crawford County, Wisconsin, where his parents had settled in 1897. Their eleven children were Rose, Mary, Lillian, Alice, Anna, Lawrence, Charles, George, Joseph, Frank and James.
In 1910 the family moved to a homestead nine miles north of Hingham, Montana. Several of her younger children were born there. In 1918 they moved on to Seattle, where Frank worked for the post office until 1941.
In 1940 and 1950 Mary and Frank lived just north of Seattle in Snohomish County, with some of their grown children. Frank died in 1955. Mary died at her home on Greenwood Avenue North in Seattle on 17 October 1961, aged 85. She had lived in Seattle forty-three years. A rosary was held at the Wiggen and Sons chapel and a requiem mass at Christ the King Church. Her obituary named six sons, five daughters, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She is buried at Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park in Seattle, beside Frank, under a stone that reads MARY L. SMRZ 1876 1961.
