Mary Leffingwell
Mary was the wife of Thomas Leffingwell, an ensign of Saybrook in Connecticut and later a lieutenant, and went with him to found Norwich in 1659 and 1660. Her surname is not known. The Leffingwell Record of 1897, the family's own genealogy, says so plainly: "Her family name we do not know." The 1945 Bushnell genealogy calls her Mary White, and the 1904 Marvin genealogy prints her as "Mary (? White)." Neither cites a record for it.
Her children were born at Saybrook: Rachel on 17 March 1648, Thomas on 27 August 1649, Jonathan on 6 December 1650, Joseph on 24 December 1652, Mary on 10 December 1654 and Nathaniel on 11 December 1656, and Samuel, probably also at Saybrook. Rachel married Robert Parke of New London in 1681. Thomas married Mary Bushnell in 1672, and Mary married Mary Bushnell's brother Joseph in 1673. Nathaniel married Mary Smith in 1682 and Samuel married Anna Dickinson.
She died at Norwich on 6 February 1710/11, "probably at a very advanced age," as the family book puts it. The town clerk entered her as "Mary Leffingwell, the Wife of Liut Thomas Leffingwell." Her husband outlived her by about three years.
The family kept two stories about her. One is that she was Mary White, an Englishwoman her husband went back across the Atlantic to marry. The other, told in two branches of the family, is that she was a sister or a daughter of Uncas, the Mohegan sachem. The family genealogist printed both as tradition, and judged the second improbable.
