Mary Legg
Mary Legg was born at Puddletown, in Dorset, about 1798. She is probably the Mary baptised there on 16 September 1798, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Legg. She is the only Mary Legg baptised in the parish in those years, and her census ages and birthplace fit.
The clerk who baptised George and Elizabeth's children wrote the parents as "George & Elizabeth LEGG; late BISHOP Spinster". It was his way of recording that the mother had been Elizabeth Bishop before she married. Mary's brothers and sisters were baptised there too: George in 1794, Elizabeth in 1800, Joseph in 1801, Ann in 1803, William in 1804, Charlotte in 1806 and Edward in 1809. George Legg's marriage to Elizabeth Bishop is not in the Puddletown register to 1813. A George Legge, aged eighty, was buried at Puddletown on 5 January 1831.
On 6 September 1819 Mary married James Hardy, an agricultural labourer, at Puddletown. Their son Robert was baptised that November. Seven more children followed: Louisa in 1822, Elisabeth in 1825, Mary in 1827, Eliza in 1832, Anne in 1835, Frederick in 1837 and Leah about 1840.
In 1841 the family lived at Narrow Brook, Puddletown, with five of the children at home. In 1851 Mary was fifty-three, born at Piddletown, with her husband, her son Frederic and two daughters.
Her son Frederick joined the Royal Marines. He married Eliza Congdon at East Stonehouse, Plymouth, in February 1860, and in 1864 he sailed for the Falkland Islands, where he raised twelve children.
At the census of April 1861 Mary and James were at North Brook in Puddletown, both entered as invalids. She was sixty-three. Neither is in the Puddletown census of 1871. Her death has not been placed. A Mary Hardy died in the Dorchester district in 1864, and another, aged seventy-six, at Plymouth in 1874. Either could be her, and neither is proven.
