Mary Margaret Huddleston
Mary Margaret Huddleston, called Maggie, was born in Kentucky about 1820. She married John Shirley, a Tennessee-born school teacher about ten years older. A marker set up by their descendants gives the year as 1839.
They lived in Jackson County, Alabama, near Stevenson, and had six children between about 1840 and 1849: Mary, Sarah, John Calvin, Lydia Jane, Mahala and Lucinda. In November 1850 she was 30, keeping house for John and the six children. Two Kentucky women lived with them: Mahala Huddleston, 65, and Lydia Huddleston, 35. Maggie's memorial names her parents as Thomas Huddleston and Mahala Hough, so the older woman was very probably her mother.
John Shirley died in 1858. Maggie was then about 38, with children from nine to eighteen. She married Jordan Peacock, a farmer born in Georgia, and their daughter Nancy Carolina was born in 1859.
On 26 June 1860 the census taker for Division 1 of Jackson County, post office Stevenson, listed the Peacock household. Jordan was 58, a farmer with land worth $5,700 and personal property worth $1,978. Maggie was 38. Nancy C. was a month old. Four of the Shirley children lived with them: John C., 16, working as a laborer, Lydia J., 14, Mahala, 12, and Lucinda, 10. A seventeen-year-old laborer, Frank Halcolm, lived there too.
Her memorial says she was last found in the 1880 census of Jackson County, and that she is buried beside Jordan Peacock in the Centennial Baptist Church Cemetery. The Shirley family marker gives her death place as Bass, Alabama, a community in Jackson County. In 1922 her daughter Lydia's death record named her as Maggrethe Huddleston.
