Mary McNemar
Mary McNemar married Daniel R. Helmick in Lewis County, Virginia, on 23 October 1828. John Talbott, a preacher of the Methodist Episcopal Church, married them and returned their names with the rest of his marriages for 1827 to 1829. She was about seventeen.
They were still in Lewis County about 1837, when their son Nathaniel was born there, and by 1850 they were in Harrison County. The census of that year has her at thirty nine with eight children in the house, from Clark at fifteen down to Albert at six months. The third of them was Joanna, aged ten, who married John A. Leonard of Preston County in Marion County in 1856 and appears in later records as Anna.
When Nathaniel died at Fairmont in 1923, his death certificate filled the printed line for his mother's maiden name with Mary McKennan, a near hearing of McNemar written down by someone ninety five years after her wedding. His own marriage register of 1864 names his parents as Daniel R. and Mary Helmick.
