Mary O'Brien
Mary O'Brien was the widow of a Castletownroche labourer and, in all likelihood, the wife of Cornelius O'Brien, who was dead by January 1905. Her maiden name and her parents are not known.
On census night, 31 March 1901, she was head of house 14 in Castletownroche, a village on the River Awbeg in north County Cork. She gave her age as 47 and called herself a housekeeper and a widow. She could not read, and she signed the return with her mark before the constable who took it. Three sons lived with her, all agricultural labourers: Cornelius, 27, who could read but not write, Batt, 26, and Mathew, 17. A daughter Mary, 24, and a grandson Cornelius, 8, who was at school, completed the house.
Her son Cornelius married Ellen Flynn of Ballydoyle in the Castletownroche chapel on 7 January 1905. The marriage entry names the groom's father as Cornelius O'Brien, a labourer, dead, and one of the two witnesses was a Bartholomew O'Brien, the full form of Batt. Ten years after the census Cornelius and Ellen were living with five children in house 13, the house next to hers. That is why she is taken to be the groom's mother, though no single record says so. What became of her after 1901 is not known.
