Mary Ring
Mary Ring was the wife of William Ring of the Leiden congregation, and was widowed there in the 1620s after her husband had been turned back from the 1620 sailing with the Speedwell. About 1629 she made the crossing herself, a widow with three children, Andrew, Susanna and Elizabeth, into a settlement then nine years old.
She lived barely two years in it. She died at Plymouth on 15 July 1631. Her will was presented to the court on 28 October 1633 and names her son Andrew, who was still a minor, her daughters Susanna Clark and Elizabeth Deane, her son in law Stephen Deane, and a grandchild.
What makes it valuable is that she itemised. The will and the inventory taken with it go through her clothes and household goods piece by piece and assign them by name: gowns, petticoats, a red waistcoat, sheets and bedding, small household metal. Very little survives from the first decade of the colony, and a document that says who owned what and who was to have it afterwards is worth more to a family history than a page of narrative. It is the record that fixes Elizabeth's parentage beyond argument.
