Mary Shiltz
Mary Shiltz is named once, in the printed MAIDEN NAME OF MOTHER field of her daughter's death register entry in 1924, with W. Va. written beside it for where she was born.
On the county birth register she is only ever Mary Slaten or Mary Slaton, under her husband's surname, which is what that book did to every mother on every page. The maiden name survives because a different clerk, sixty years later, was working from a form that asked for it properly.
Shiltz is the German Schultz or Schiltz written the way a Mason County ear heard it. She was born in West Virginia, so the crossing was her parents' or her grandparents', not hers.
She died in the county on 1 June 1893 and her husband outlived her by fourteen years.
Her eldest known son, James W. Slayton, was born about 1848 in Greene County, Pennsylvania, according to his own Mason County marriage licence of 1867, which names his parents as Daniel W. and Mary Slayton. Whatever county she was born in, she was living in that corner of Pennsylvania as a young wife.
