Mary Sutliff

Mary Sutliffe was baptised at Branford in Connecticut in 1701, the second daughter of John Sutliffe the miller and Hannah Brockett. Her mother was a daughter of Benjamin Brockett of New Haven. Her father's family had come to Branford about 1679 or 1680. His widowed mother, Hannah Plympton, brought her four Sutcliffe children there after their father was killed in King Philip's War. John Sutliffe was one of the founders of Durham and the miller at Northbury. Mary and her sisters Hannah, Lydia and Abigail were baptised at Branford between 1699 and 1706.

On 19 October 1720 she married Benjamin Harrison, a son of Thomas and Margaret Stent Harrison. Six months later her elder sister Hannah married his elder brother, Capt. Thomas Harrison, at Branford on 12 April 1721. Hannah and Thomas went to Litchfield, where he bought a thousand acres and gave a hundred to each of nine sons.

About 1738 Mary and Benjamin went up into the part of Waterbury that afterwards became Wolcott, then called Farmingbury parish. Three of her children are named in the record: Abigail, who married David Warner, a son of Dr. Benjamin Warner, in 1753; Benjamin, born 1722; and Aaron, born 26 April 1726.

The year 1760 took her husband and her eldest son together. Her husband died on 6 March, aged sixty one, and Benjamin the younger a week later, on 13 March, in his thirty ninth year. She was about fifty nine and she did not stay a widow: on 30 July 1760, less than five months later, she married Thomas Clark, a son of William Clark of Lebanon. He died on 12 November 1764.

Her death is not recorded. She was living at her second marriage in 1760, and presumably at her second husband's death in 1764.
