Mary Woods
Mary Woods was born on 18 August 1773. Her parents are not known. A family history written in 1961 gives her middle name as Pauline. Her stone reads Mary P., and her eldest son named a daughter Mary Permelah, which points to Permelia.
About 1793 she married Alexander Nisbett Jr. in Lancaster County, South Carolina, in the Waxhaw settlement on the Catawba River. They lived on the farm of his widowed mother, Agness Nisbet, until her death in 1797. Joseph William was born there in September 1794, then Nancy about 1797 and William M. about 1800.
About 1800 the family went west over the mountains to Middle Tennessee and settled in Rutherford County, south of Murfreesboro. Mary bore six more children there: Isabella D. in 1802, Elizabeth P. about 1805, Alexander about 1808, Rebecca, Ephraim about 1813 and Margaret about 1814. Alexander and Rebecca died as children.
Her husband died in November 1841 without a will. On 22 November 1844 their children signed an agreement settling his estate, and they left all his land to "Mary Nisbett the widow of Alexander Nisbett deceased during her natural life." She kept the farm for ten years as a widow.
Mary died on 21 June 1851, aged 77. She was buried beside her husband in the family graveyard on their farm, about five miles south of Murfreesboro. In 1957 their two stones were the only ones still standing among about forty graves.
