Matěj Sekavec
Matěj Sekavec lived in house number 29 at Chocenice, a village west of Kolín in Central Bohemia. Chocenice belonged to the parish of Křečhoř, and in 1841 its land lay in the Kouřim estate. The priests always called him a familiant. A familiant, in the Bohemian villages of that time, was a small holder settled on a plot carved out of the lord's own farmland when the estates were parcelled out in the late 1700s. He held a cottage and a few fields of his own and paid rent for them, a step below the sedlák, the full peasant farmer with a farm and a team.
He married Anna Nouzák, the daughter of Josef Nouzák, a familiant of Zlaté Slunce, a hamlet of the same parish. Their son Jan was born in house number 29 at the very start of January 1813 and was the first child baptized in the parish that year.
Matěj was still living when Jan married Anna Vosecký at Svojšice on 30 June 1841. One of the two witnesses at that wedding was another familiant of Chocenice. By June 1853, when Jan's son Václav was baptized at Krychnov, Matěj was dead. Ties to his home village held: a farmer of Chocenice, František Mokrý, stood godfather to Václav in 1853, and his wife Marie was godmother to Jan's daughter Johanna in 1857.
In 1866 his son Jan took the family to Minnesota, and later to Kansas.
