Mathew Clarkson
Mathew Clarkson was born in Yorkshire, England, in the 1790s. The 1850 census gave his age as 56 and his birthplace as England. When his son Abram Walker Clarkson died in Ohio in 1929, the death certificate named the father as Matthew F. Clarkson and gave his birthplace as Yorkshire, England.
He emigrated to New York and settled in Steuben County, in the hill country south of the Finger Lakes. His wife Mary was born in New York about 1812. Their children were born there across nearly twenty years: Ann J. about 1835, James about 1837, Charles about 1841, Mary A. about 1843, Elizabeth about 1845, Abram Walker on 13 January 1848, Mathew Flint about 1849, and George B. about 1852.
In 1850 the family was living at Bath, the county seat. In 1855 the state census found them in the neighboring town of Cohocton. By 1865 they were back in Bath. Mathew was 65, Mary 55, and the household held their sons James, 29, Charles, 23, Abram, 17, Mathew, 15, and George, 13, their daughters Mary A. Wilcox, 22, and Lizzie, 19, and two children the census called adopted, Eugene V. Elwood, 9, and Jennie Wilcox, 3.
Three of his sons, Charles, Mathew and George, went west to Kansas after the Civil War. There they hunted buffalo as the Clarkson Brothers until 1876, once holding between 10,000 and 11,000 hides at a camp on Ladder Creek. Abram became a farmer and mail carrier and died at Zanesville, Ohio, in 1929.
