Mathew Young

Father: Richard Young

Mathew Young was the third son of Richard Young of Drumgoon and Lahard, in the parish of Killeshandra in County Cavan. He lived at Lahard. What is known of him comes from H. B. Swanzy's notes on the County Cavan militia and army lists, printed in Notes and Queries in 1924 and 1925. Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland agrees with Swanzy that he was the father of Elizabeth Young, who married the Rev. William Brooke.

Swanzy lists him as a lieutenant in Newburgh's Dragoons in 1740. Dragoons were soldiers who rode to battle and could fight on foot, and regiments were then known by the names of their colonels.

He married Frances, a daughter of Major William Nesbitt of Drumalee, who had been High Sheriff in 1709. A High Sheriff was the crown's officer in a county for a year, responsible for juries, writs and elections. In Swanzy's words Mathew "had, with six other children who died young, two sons and five daughters". James, of Lahard, was baptized at Killeshandra on 18 August 1737 and was High Sheriff in 1767. Arthur was baptized on 9 May 1747. He became a lieutenant-colonel and died without children in 1828. Jane married John Carleton of Toona in 1753. Elizabeth married the Rev. William Brooke in 1755. Catherine married Lancelot Armstrong in 1754, Abigail married the Rev. John Beatty in 1760, and Dorothy married Captain Robert Armstrong in 1764.

His daughter Elizabeth married his own nephew. William Brooke was the son of Mathew's sister Catherine and her husband Alexander Brooke of Dromavana. Swanzy records the wedding, on 26 September 1755, as Elizabeth's marriage to "her cousin, the Rev. William Brooke, Rector of Granard, Co. Longford". Their daughter Honor married Eyles Irwin, the traveller, in 1778.

His own dates are not recorded.
